Hotel Massage Etiquette in Bangkok: What Travellers Should Know

Check the hotel's visitor policy first

Bangkok hotels set their own rules for guests receiving visitors. Some ask visitors to leave ID at reception, some apply a joiner fee, and some allow no outside visitors at all. Policies also differ between hotels, serviced apartments and condominium rentals, so a quick question at the front desk or in the hotel chat saves any confusion later.

What to prepare in the room

Very little is needed. A clear space beside the bed is enough for a mat, and the bed itself works for oil treatments.

• •Shower beforehand if you can — it is appreciated, not required
• •Lay a spare towel over the bedding for oil treatments
• •Set the air conditioning to a temperature you can lie still in
• •Have your room number ready so the therapist is not delayed at reception

What the therapist brings

Fresh towels, the oil or balm for your chosen treatment and any supplies needed to work on a bed or floor mat. Nothing is reused between guests.

Clothing and privacy

Traditional Thai massage is done fully clothed. For oil treatments you may keep your underwear on, and towels cover you throughout, with only the area being worked on uncovered. You can ask the therapist to skip any area you would rather not have massaged.

Communicating during the session

Pressure preferences differ, and 'strong' means different things to different people. Say so as soon as anything feels uncomfortable — adjusting pressure mid-session is completely normal and expected.

Tipping

Tipping is not required and is never included automatically. Many guests in Thailand give a small tip when they are happy with the session, but the price you agreed is the full amount owed.
